Australia doesn’t export 80 per cent of its agriculture as widely believed. It exports around 25 per cent by value at second stage production, according to research done over a decade ago by economist, Dr Mark McGovern. Yet agricultural policy is almost exclusively aimed at the export market. As farm profits continue their long-term decline and food imports continue to rise, Australia faces becoming a net importer of food in the not too distant future.
